Huge bribe alleged as list of ODM Homa Bay nominees emerges
The integrity of ODM nominations in Homa Bay County has been questioned following the emergence of a list circulating indicating that some ODM aspirants, including a number of incumbents, have been selected to win the party's upcoming nominations. The list, which some aspirants have received, indicates that Governor Cyprian Awiti will win the ODM nomination for a second term.
The list includes a number of parliamentary candidates among them John Mbadi (Suba South), Martin Owino (Ndhiwa), Judy Kamaria (Mbita), Ong'ondo Were (Kasipul), Silvance Osele(Kabondo Kasipul), Opondo Kaluma (Homa Bay Town). Mbadi, Osele and Kaluma are incumbents. There are no names for candidates of Karachuonyo and Rangwe parliamentary seats.
All the leaders in the list are allies of Governor Awiti, who has been accused by his opponents of orchestrating the appointmentof friendly officials to oversee the ODM nominations in each of the constituencies whose leaders are alleged to have laid downs to influence the process. Mr Mbadi is also the ODM national chairman whose office has authority over the National Elections Board.
Yesterday, this reporter asked Dr Robert Arunga, the NEB member in charge of Homa Bay, about complaints against panelists selected to man ODM nominations across Homa Bay County, some of whom aspirants have alleged to be known allies of contestants. The panelists will oversee the nominations on behalf of NEB.
Dr Arunga did not respond to our questions about the complaints which are generating growing tensions in the county. An allegation of a huge bribe has been alleged, with unverified reports indicating a NEB member was given Sh10 million by an aspirant for position of governor.
