President Uhuru Kenyatta welcomed his daughter-in-law to-be Fiona Achola to the Kenyatta family in an introduction ceremony held Saturday at the Head of State’s Ichaweri home in Gatundu South Constituency, Kiambu County.

Fiona Achola is betrothed to President Kenyatta’s eldest son Jomo Kenyatta Jr.

The introduction ceremony (known in Kikuyu as Itara) was attended by invited guests only, among them top government officials, relatives of the couple, friends and few neighbours of the first family.

The Itara ceremony was heavily themed on Kikuyu traditions, with the bride and groom wearing traditional regalia.

It comes nearly three weeks after Jomo Kenyatta was introduced to Ms Achola’s family in Karen, Nairobi – a private event that was attended by Uhuru Kenyatta.

In his speech at Achola’s home in Karen, the President referred to his daughter-in-law to-be as “highly-educated, soft-spoken and a girl his family loves.”

Before the ceremony (where Jomo was introduced to Achola’s family) the pair’s relationship had remained a well kept secret.

However, the two had been spotted together at several public events. They attended a past Jamuhuri Day celebration together and they were also seen together when U.S. President Barack Obama visited Kenya as well as during the Pope’s visit.

Jomo and Achola are expected to tie the knot in December this year.

Achola’s heritage is very exotic. She has both Kenyan and Ugandan bloodlines. Her mother, Ruth Theddesia Ngobi is sister to Raychelle Omamo, the Cabinet Secretary for Defence.

Achola’s maternal grandfather, William Odongo Omamo, was a Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Environment and Natural Resources and a former Member of Parliament for Bondo Constituency and Muhoroni Constituency.
