Long-time Nation business journalist and veteran editor Washington Akumu is on the road to recovery following a series of operations at the Nairobi Hospital.
Mr Akumu, who was until recently a business editor with the Nation Media Group, has had a long struggle with a kidney tumour.
Fondly known to his friends and acquaintances as Wash, he has enjoyed a long and distinguished career, including editorial and correspondent assignments with the Nation and Standard. He also worked in the communications department of giant mobile network operator Safaricom.
OPERATION
According to a close family friend, Mr Eddie Malitt, Mr Akumu was admitted to hospital on February 9 and underwent the first operation on February 10, 2018.
“The operation, which entailed the removal of the affected kidney, was successful but, as he recuperated, doctors noticed that he had developed a complication, which needed another operation, this time on his leg. But he developed yet another complication, which necessitated an operation on his abdomen.
‘‘All the operations went well and his condition is stable,  although he is still in hospital.  He is expected to be discharged in another week,” Mr Malitt told the Nation.
His family and friends are meeting to raise funds for the medical bill totalling over Sh10m today from 4.30pm at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi.
